One of the most prominent traits of the MSI is the affordability of their products. While delivering the good work it doesn’t tout an exceptionally high price tag. The same is true for MSI GE63VR Raider-075. While an 1800 bucks is never a small amount by any chance but it nonetheless is a fairly low price for a 1070 gaming rig. So let’s see how it stacks up in the battle against its competitors.
Check out the latest price for the MSI GE63VR Raider-075
Specs:
- CPU – Intel Core i7 Quad-Core (7th Gen), 2.8 GHz
- GPU – 8 GB DDR5, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
- Memory – 16 GB (1 x 16 GB) DDR4
- Screen – 15.6-inch Full HD IPS (1,920 x 1,080)
- Storage – 1 TB SATA HDD + 128 GB SSD
- OS – Windows 10 Home edition
Benefits:
- Performance – This machine includes a powerful Intel Core i7 processor, a slightly small (at least in comparison with some of the other gaming rigs) 16 GB of RAM and a hybrid storage system of 128 GB of NVMe SSD and 1 TB of HDD. It’s powerful enough not only to tackle your day-to-day tasks but also to some of the most gruesome games that might make most of the laptops come down to their knees. The dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 GPU with 8GB of VRAM is a great GPU for proper gaming. It can run games like Witcher 3 (70 fps at 1440p, ~40 fps at 4K), Hitman (>75 fps at 1440p, 45 fps at 4K), Ashes of the Singularity (~85 fps at 1440p, 45 fps at 4K) and Grand Theft Auto V (<70 fps at 1440p, ~35 fps at 4K) at both 1440p and 4K display settings. Although there are some performance issues present in it. More on that later.
- Audio – I personally am not a big fan of the downward facing speakers. Although I have to say that the speakers really pack a punch when it’s time to perform. The downward facing trait is compensated by the top-notch Nahimic 2 Audio system. With these speakers, you would barely ever need your external game special headset. Also, fan noise is a major issue in many high-performance laptops. But it’s not the case for this one. It stays quite cool and calm even while gaming full on.
- Design – The laptop’s looks resemble overly like a gaming machine with 2 angled accents with highlights in red running from the bottom of the screen towards the top on a black brushed metallic exterior. A part of the backside of the laptop is made of metal whereas the rest is made of hard plastic. Oh another thing, there’s a big dragon engraved at the backside (cooool!!). Now talking about the inputs, the keyboard feels great. They also included a separate number pad which according to me is a huge plus. So many laptops these days decide to not include them. The trackpad is sensitive as well.
Downsides:
- Battery – Let’s be honest: if your laptop (and we are talking about high-performance gaming laptops here) stays awake for more or less 3 hours then it can be considered as a good showing. But sadly enough, GE63VR Raider-075 doesn’t pass the test gracefully. Under normal workload like watching movies or surfing the internet, the battery can run out of juice in just 2 and a half hour. It not only lags behind the category average it also trails behind one of its biggest competitors Alienware 15 R3 (3:15).
- Power – In spite of the high-end hardware it performed poorly in some of the tests. It lagged behind Alienware 15 R3, the model with a lower configuration, in many cases specifically. Alienware beat MSI in many of the synthetic processing tests by a small margin. So it does submit in front of the sheer quality of the Alienware.
Verdict:
If you want a high-end gaming rig with a 1070 GPU then this laptop might not be the best choice that you ever make. It’s not to say that it’s not a good gaming machine. But for the price limit at which it comes it only is expected to be flawless. So if you are still very much inclined to get this one I would only advice you to go through some of the alternatives before making your decision.
