Specs:

  • CPU – Intel Core i7 Quad-Core (7th Gen), 2.8 GHz
  • GPU – 6 GB DDR5, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
  • Memory – 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) DDR4, extendable upto 32 GB
  • Screen – 15.6-inch Full HD IPS (1,920 x 1,080)
  • Storage – 256 GB SSD
  • OS – Windows 10 Home edition

Benefits:

  • Performance – No need to mention that it’s literally a powerhouse. With a hardware specification of 7th generation Intel Core i7 processor, 8 GB of RAM with 2 channels which can be extended up to 32 GB and a 256 GB PCIe SSD it can handle almost any everyday task. There is also a slot for an additional SSD or an HDD. Now it has got an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 GPU which is considered as a good gaming GPU. Latest titles like Mass Effect Andromeda (>60 fps), BioShock Infinite (>70 fps) and Hitman (60 fps) run buttery smooth on ultra or high settings. It is, on an average, 10-20% faster than the last generation lower powered GPUs like the 1050 or 1050Ti. This GPU also supports the VR. In essence, it’s a great graphics card for gaming in the 1080p quality.
  • Battery – Well, the gaming laptops were never known for their battery longevity. But the 60 Wh battery pack in this laptop really packs a punch. Whereas the category average of high-performance laptops is 4 hours it lasted even more than 6 hours under the standard workload. Only Acer Predator Helios 300’s battery backup (more than 6 and a half hour) is comparable to it whereas MSI GS63VR 7RF-228US (3:50) and Origin PC Eon15-S (4:30) lags far behind it.
  • Cooling – The cooling and ventilation system is an essential part of a gaming laptop. And I would give Legion 720 a grade between average and good in this aspect. The system stays sufficiently cool under normal workflow. It barely ever goes over 30°C. But under heavy workload like intense gaming for an hour or so, it can get heated up to 40-45°C (104-113°F) which is somewhat greater than the comfort level of 37°C (98°F). But then again, it’s a high-performance gaming laptop. This much is tolerable I think.

Downsides:

  • Display – The 15.6-inch FHD display is just not up to the mark for a gaming laptop, to be honest. With a maximum brightness of 220 nits, there is plenty of room for improvement. It’s far behind from the category average of 290 nits. The display covers only 70% of the sRGB colour gamut. Although the delta E value (0.2) of the screen is pretty low meaning a highly colour accurate screen. But again, when the display supports only that much part of the colour space it’s really meaningless to be happy with the colour accuracy.
  • Slow SSD – While an SSD is a major step up from a standard hard disk drive it is pretty slow, to be honest. The average reading and writing speed sums up to mere 150 MBps which is quite low for an SSD. Some of the competitors like Predator Helios 300 and Eon15-S provide a faster SSD with an average transfer speed of 200 MBps.

Verdict:

While it couldn’t prove to be a perfect machine, it certainly amazed me with its performance. It has got some issues though like the dim display and the excessive weight. One thing for sure, with some tweaking here and there by Lenovo can really make it a great gaming laptop. It has got all the potential to be one. Recommended.
