Dell Inspiron i7577-5241BLK-PUS Review

Dell is not really a big name in the gaming market. Dell especially the Inspiron series laptops are mostly aimed towards the mid-range or higher mid-range consumers. But this one, Inspiron i7577-5241BLK-PUS, a part of the Inspiron 7000 series can be considered a lower range gaming laptop. Let’s check it out then.

  • CPU – Intel Core i5 Quad-Core (7th Gen), 2.5 GHz
  • GPU – 6 GB DDR5, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
  • Memory – 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4, extendable upto 32 GB
  • Screen – 15.6-inch Full HD IPS (1,920 x 1,080)
  • Storage – 1 TB SATA HDD + 128 GB SSD
  • OS – Windows 10 Home edition

  • Performance – Let’s take a peek at the specs sheet. It houses an Intel i5 processor, 8 gigs of RAM which can be extended up to 32 GB and a cocktail of 1 TB hard disk drive and 128 GB solid state drive. Under regular workflow, it performed really well. Even when a large number of tabs were open in the browser there were almost no noticeable lag or delay while running. But its i5 can prove to be slightly less efficient at times. Now, it fell short in the performance in both the synthetic and real-life tests due to its relatively low powerful i5 processor in comparison with its competitors like Lenovo Legion Y520, Asus ROG Strix GL503 or Acer Predator Helios 300 each of which houses more powerful i7 processor.
  • GPU – Inspiron i7577-5241BLK-PUS is equipped with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card. This GPU can be considered a starting gaming module that is not really is capable of running many games in the Ultra settings yet is powerful enough to run many AAA games in medium or high settings for reasonable frame rate. Here is the small rundown of the performance: Rise of the Tomb Raider (>30 fps in 1080p high), Hitman (~70 fps in 1080p high) and GTA V (>40 fps in 1080p high). One thing is clear that it surely isn’t gonna be just a showpiece on your laptop with this much capability. Although not very efficient, the 1060 also is VR ready meaning you can at least have a taste of the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift.
  • Price – Now, did I ever say how much reasonable the price is?? No? Then let me say it now. To deliver an appropriate starter gaming laptop with a dedicated GPU right under $1000 mark is not really an easy task at all. There are even laptops with nearly same specifications that cost you around 1100 or 1200 bucks. Even one of its closest contenders Acer Predator Helios 300 that comes with a slightly better configuration is priced at 1050 bucks or higher. So it’s really hard to compete against this one at least in the price section.

  • Display – Whereas the panel is not as bad as it may seem at first the FHD display is not the cream of the crop either. The screen is pretty dull, to be honest. With a brightness level of 230 nits, it falls behind the category average of 250 nits as well as the Asus ROG Strix GL503 (300 nits). The display covers an area of 70% of the sRGB colour space. It lags behind Strix (115%) and Helios 300 (85%) as well in this section as the category average lies around 100%. Looking at the numbers it can be told easily that the display is really not something that you’d fall in love with quite easily.
  • Portability – While this shouldn’t be a deal breaker but it’s definitely worthy to be mentioned that it’s a tiny bit heavier than the rest. With a dimension of 10.8 x 15.3 x 0.9 inch, it certainly is much slimmer than the bulkier Helios 300 (1.5 inch). But still, Inspiron is a bit heavier than both Strix (5.6 lbs) and Helios 300 (5.5 lbs) with a weight of 5.8 at (2.6 kg). But again, as a sufficiently configured gaming laptop, I would say it’s not overly heavy, just endurable.

As told earlier, it’s really a great deal looking at the price tag. While it did fell a bit short in certain sections it also showed good or even great performance in the others. It should be a good choice for the occasional gamer or even for a serious gamer. In a nutshell, it’s a steal at that price point. Recommended.
