Benefits:
- Price – One of the major positives of this laptop is its fairly cheap price. It provides high performance to price ratio. You can hardly find any laptop in today’s market that comes with an Intel i7 processor, a 1 TB of external storage and a dedicated graphics unit (no matter if it’s as inefficient as a 940MX in today’s world…;)). Some of the competing laptops like HP Pavilion 15t-X7P42AV and Acer Aspire VX15 VX5-591G-589S can even cost you an extra $150 to $300. It really places itself miles ahead of its competitors in this section at least.
- Performance – The Intel Core i7 processor with 4 MB of cache is powerful enough to tackle almost all the regular everyday jobs. The NVIDIA 940MX GPU may not be is the toughest graphics card in the world, but is capable enough to run some old games at respectable quality. The list includes well-known names like Half Life 2 – Lost Coast Benchmark (>150 fps), Left 4 Dead (100 fps), Call of Duty 4 – Modern Warfare (99 fps) and Far Cry 2 (63 fps) at high quality.
Downsides:
- Display – The display in Asus Vivobook 15 is of below the par quality. Okay, it’s not that bad either. Rather it’s just an average performer. The maximum brightness of the screen lies around 230 nits which is pretty average, if not bad. While it usually is bright enough to work indoors, it can kinda fall short for the outdoors though. The average dE (delta E) value is recorded around 2.3 to 1 covering around 60% area of the sRGB colour space. Bottom line is that the colours feel somewhat flat and overall washed out.
- Battery – The battery is just the same as the display. While it isn’t half bad, it isn’t anything splendid either. In the idle mode, it lasts as long as 10 hours which is quite good in my opinion. But under load conditions, the tiny 42 Wh battery really starts to reveal its weaknesses. It lasts only 6 to 6 and a half hours while watching HD videos and not using Wi-Fi, and 3 hours when surfing the net using Wi-Fi before running out of juice. Both the numbers fall behind from the class average. While making use of its 940MX graphics card, it lasts slightly more than an hour.
- Noise – Noise is another issue on this laptop. The noisy fan and the clunky hard disk duo can be as loud as 45 dB at the head level. The noise is pretty irritating and audible while going through heavy workload (read gaming).
Verdict:
While it is miles ahead of its competing models regarding affordability, it also does come with a handful of hassles. Asus had to cut some of the parts of the laptop down in quality to release it at a fairly low price. So, go for it if you are a bit bound by the budget.
