Lenovo was never a big name in the gaming laptop market. They were mostly a producer of budget and high range laptops. But their latest entry in the gaming industry with Legion series was quite obvious. So let’s check it out then.

Specs:

  • CPU – Intel Core i7 Quad-Core (7th Gen), 2.9 GHz
  • GPU – 8 GB DDR5, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
  • Memory – 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4, extendable upto 64 GB
  • Screen – 17.3-inch Full HD IPS (1,920 x 1,080)
  • Storage – 1 TB SATA HDD + 512 GB SSD
  • OS – Windows 10 Home edition

Benefits:

  • Performance – Let’s take a look at the configuration. It includes an Intel Core i7 processor (Intel 7820HK processor which has relatively higher turbo frequency), 16 GB of DDR4 RAM with 4 distinct channels to upgrade it up to 64 GB and a hybrid storage of 512 GB SSD and 1 TB HDD. Considering the powerful hardware it’s no wonder that it was quite zippy even while multitasking at its fullest with 20s of tabs open in the browser and watching video simultaneously. The storage device was pretty fast as well with an average transfer rate of 650 MBps with a mixed type of files.
  • Display – It comes with a 17.3-inch FHD panel with anti-glare coating. It comes with one of the best monitors among its competitors. The average brightness is found around 360 nits which is pretty incredible considering the category average of roughly 300 nits. Only Asus ROG G752VS OC Edition was brighter with a luminance of 470 nits whereas Asus ROG Zephyrus (260 nits) and HP Omen 15 (290 nits) falls way behind. The sRGB colour coverage of the panel is around 100% which is again pretty good considering Legion as a desktop replacement as it is almost at the par with the rest. The colour accuracy is also excellent with a dE value of 0.3; Only Gigabyte P57Xv7 and Zephyrus were more colour accurate than this screen.
  • GPU – It houses a bulky NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card which packs quite some punch in it. This GPU is an excellent choice for gaming in the 1080p display settings as it is able to run almost all the newest titles in the ultra settings in more than 40 fps which is considered to be fantastic. It was able to run games like GTA V (72 fps in 1080p Ultra), Rise of the Tomb Raider (58 fps in 1080p Ultra) and Hitman (>100 fps in 1080p Ultra) buttery smooth even in the ultra settings. But Zephyrus and Alienware performed a bit better overall due to the more powerful GTX 1080 GPU.

Downsides:

  • Battery – Okay let’s clear it out first, gaming laptops were never known for their battery life. But even so, it should last for a considerable amount of time. While doing some regular stuff like web surfing or video streaming it runs nearly for 3 hours before the 90 Wh battery runs out of juice. The number falls slightly behind the category average of 3:30. But again, not many of the contenders were able to touch that mark anyway.
  • Portability – Now, Lenovo Legion 920 is pretty beefy. With a thickness of 36 mm it was way more than any of its competitors with Asus Zephyrus being the slimmest in the list with a max thickness of 18 mm). But you’d start to feel the wrath of the Legion when you start carrying this 10 pounder (10.1 lb or 4.6 kg to be precise) on your back. The heaviest laptop in the list after it was the Alienware 17 R4 with 9.6 lbs. Let’s be honest, it wasn’t meant (and built) to be carried every time with you. I mean it’s meant to be your desktop replacement, duh!!

Verdict:

The negatives like the undeserving battery or the excess weight can be a deal breaker only if you want your laptop to be way too portable. But as stated earlier, it’s supposed to be a full-blown replacement of your desktop PC. So considering its excellent performance I would say Lenovo Legion Y920 80YW000EUS is a great gaming laptop on its own. Recommended.
